Transgenre Books is a newsletter focused on LGBTQIA+ speculative fiction. By this, I mean:
- Books with explicitly LGBTQIA+ characters and plotlines
- Books by LGBTQIA+ identified authors
- Queer readings of books without explicit themes
- Science fiction, fantasy, horror and related genres
Speculative fiction covers sci-fi, fantasy and its related genres, like urban fantasy, slipstream, and alternate histories. The bulk of my reading falls into this category, and I tend to stay pretty up-to-date on new and upcoming releases in this category.
As for who I am? I’m a lifelong reader with an academic background in English literature, sociology, and gender, sexuality and women’s studies. I’m also a white transmasc nonbinary person who does freelance narrative game design, particularly in fantasy and sci-fi spaces.
I focus on reviewing diverse books, and my reviews focus on highlighting what I enjoyed about the work, who I would recommend the book to, and why. Notes on specific areas of representation are included when relevant, as well as content warnings. However, I recommend that readers still check other reviews and look at additional sites for content warnings, as I may miss details that are important to other people.
Newsletters are typically sent out at 2 PM on Wednesday afternoons as a mid-week treat. The content varies, but you can expect the following based on these titles:
New and Upcoming Releases
Book reviews, recommendations and sneak peeks for books published within the last two months or coming out within the next year
I have over 120 books on my To Read list, and I’m trying to get it under 100 by the end of 2022! You can see my to-read list on my Storygraph page.
Worth the Hype?
My review of current popular books, with a focus on my personal feelings about them and if they’re worth checking out.
Reads (or rereads!) of books that are more than 10 years old, often with more in depth critiques
The smash or pass of book recommendations. I’ll review everything I read in the past month and give my official buy, borrow or skip.
Thank you for giving me a try. I hope to see you around in the future!
